Alice’s adventures have always been, let’s say interesting, to say the least. Recently, she has stumbled upon Social Media in Wonderland, at the infamous tea party, the Queen of Heart’s Croquet game, and in her other ample wanderings.
So, some of her simple takeaways may be the following:
- “We’re all mad here.”
? Cheshire Cat
There is a kind of madness about social media, with its constant morphing and dizzying identities. Post, share, like, unlike, comment, etc. can become an addictive habit very quickly.
So, getting curious about social media is a good thing. Learn how to use this marketing tool well. Like Alice, get “Curiouser and curiouser”. Make sure you ask questions to get some informative answers. Look at metrics to give you insights on how you are measuring up and learn from the numbers. Use them to build better social campaigns.
- “She drank from a bottle called DRINK ME
And she grew so tall,
She ate from a plate called TASTE ME
And down she shrank so small.”
? Alice
Make sure your content is lucid. Some of Alice’s mishaps occurred because content was incompletely labeled. Don’t make that mistake in your content writing. Do your research and write only about subjects you know well.
Simple, direct prose goes a long way with a reader. Remember “Elements of Style by William Strunk, JR”? You may want to keep that handy.
3. “Only a few find the way, some don’t recognize it when they do – some… don’t ever want to.”
? The Cheshire Cat
Having a sense of direction helps. Know what you want to do with social media and where you want to go with it. Otherwise, you’ll have to ask the Cheshire cat:
“Alice: Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?
The Cheshire Cat: That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.
Alice: I don’t much care where.
The Cheshire Cat: Then it doesn’t much matter which way you go.
Alice: …So long as I get somewhere.
The Cheshire Cat: Oh, you’re sure to do that, if only you walk long enough.”
Of course, some trial and error is needed but formulate a vision and a goal to make the most of your social media marketing efforts.
- Queen of Hearts: Who’s been painting my roses red? WHO’S BEEN PAINTING MY ROSES RED? /Who dares to taint / With vulgar paint / The royal flower bed? / For painting my roses red / Someone will lose his head.
Card Painter: Oh no, Your Majesty, please! It’s all *his* fault!
Card Painter: Not me, your grace! The ace, the ace!
Queen of Hearts: You?
Card Painter: No, two!
Queen of Hearts: The deuce, you say?
Card Painter: Not me! The three!
Queen of Hearts: That’s enough! Off with their heads!
Don’t make stupid social blunders. Review your posts before they are made public. Several social media software tools enable you to do so (NewzSocial, for one). Or, you will have to deal with the notorious Queen of Hearts.
- “The time has come
The walrus said
To talk of many things:
Of shoes- and ships-
And sealing wax-
Of cabbages and kings-
And why the sea is boiling hot-
And whether pigs have wings.”
– Walrus
Don’t get too boring or robotic with social. People like interesting articles and well-placed humor in content. Make content informative and add interest by adding good images or having a story to tell. The human touch helps.
Ask: What other lessons can you add to the above?
